A clip from an Astros game, in which a boyfriend deftly dodges a foul ball that then dings his girlfriend’s arm, is making the rounds in blogs and news as evidence that chivalry is dead.
There’s a bit of shame being thrown Bo’s way, but he was only acting in an equalist manner, so is it really deserved? When a baseball is headed directly at you, you have three choices: catch it, dodge it, or get hit by it. As a former pitcher I am quite familiar with the last scenario; I’ve been hit smack in the face by a line drive, and I’ve beaned a few batters as well. It’s part of the game. Also, when the ball is headed your way, it isn’t as though there’s much time to consider one’s options. I can imagine that, instinctively, if there was a little kid who might get hit, I’d probably throw myself in front of the kid, but you’d have to be trained to do it for an adult — even a woman.
I guess all this clip shows is that the training in regards to protecting women has either lost its effect or isn’t happening as much.
Now Bo is being lambasted on morning talk shows, where elderly men are shaming him and questioning his manhood.

I wonder whether we’ll be treated to stories of women “bailing” on men who lose jobs, who aren’t “fulfilling” their fantasies or who just no longer excite them? Nah, that’s too common, so not newsworthy, I suppose.
