Dr. Tara Palmatier has just opened a new website devoted to helping men who have been victims of abusive partners, and I had the privilege of helping her get it off the ground. I found Dr. Palmatier to be a bright, genuine person who is both easy to work with and a fast learner — traits that I am sure are of great utility in her profession as a therapist.
Due to the incredible pressure the law and society puts on men during separation and divorce, a pressure so severe that it causes many men to take their own lives, therapy and support for men is a crucial but sadly underused service. However, people are beginning to recognize that this is a problem, and that the proposed feminist solution – an endless escalation of conflict between men on one side and women, courts and law enforcement on the other – leads to countless tragedies. Additionally, more and more men are realizing that seeking out help is a better idea than trying to take on the world alone.
As I have recommended before, men who are going through the nightmare of divorce would do well to seek out any and all assistance they can enlist, including that offered by professionals as well as friends, family and even strangers — Good Samaritans do exist!
Finally, Dr. Palmatier has demonstrated a rare combination of compassion and good business sense by catering to an underserved demographic. In time, many more professionals are sure to follow suit when they, too, see the opportunity presented, but those who were pioneers in the field will always stand out.
