A UNC student falsely claimed to be the victim of a hate crime last week. According to him, “A man burned his hand and called him an anti-gay slur.”
The student, Quinn Matney, is a freshman at the university. As it turns out, he made this story up. According to Chancellor Thorp, of the Department of Public Safety, “That report, filed with campus police on April 5, was false.” Thorp also went on to say that, “it is important to recognize that incidents of harassment do occur… When they do, we take them seriously. We strive to foster a welcoming, inclusive and safe environment at Carolina.”
The University officials no longer plan to proceed with plans to report the incident as a hate crime to the federal government.
Matney is expected to face charges for filing the false report.
There is an interesting partnership between feminists and homosexual men. What this poor individual did was simply what he has noticed other women in his age bracket do (and get away with) time and again. The big difference is that women have a victim card in their deck while men (homo or hetero-sexual) do not. Considering all the coddling laws that have been passed in favor of both groups, it isn’t unreasonable that he would consider himself within the protected class and immune from ‘retaliatory’ prosecution when the lie was discovered. Ironically, he has found out that, even though he has laws specific for him, he is still a man and expected to be responsible for his actions (see: victim card holders). If this story gets out, perhaps the gay population can see exactly how they are viewed in the eyes of the law and they need no additional support.
In all actuality, I am glad that he is going to be charged as this would have had the potential to become a double whammy for men. Being besieged on both sides with false allegations would only serve to further alienate the already besieged college male.
