A new study published in the pestigious online journal Time Magazine reports that inquiries to “Sugar Daddy” websites have risen an astonishing 50% since the government shutdown began last week. This is raising concerns that women, especially single moms, are being forced into prostitution of the most scurrilous kind – that of servicing creepy older men – by the Republican’s callous failure to mail out checks to our most neediest citizens. Some of them veterans!
The term “Sugar Daddy” (an acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) describes consensual financial arrangements in which young females provide companionship to generous older gentlemen in exchange for funding so they can “go to school”.
Many feel that this study shows that the shutdown affects women and minorities the hardest, citing that women of color are especially prone to exploitation by privileged older white males.
One doesn’t have to be an expert to see the adverse affects the shutdown is having on the most vulnerable members of our society. On TV I saw a human-interest story about workers from the local military base being forced to stand in line to receive food donations from volunteers after their cupboards ran bare less than a week after the shutdown. The segment featured one obese afro-bunned white woman, described as a “single mom”, struggling unassisted to get sacks of food into her $30K SUV. Another large man, having worked at the base for 28 years, could not make ends meet because of the government closing and felt humiliated to accept the food handouts, but what else could he do?
As the shutdown continues with no resolution in sight, we can expect to hear more heart-rendering stories about how it has affected the most vulnerable and needy citizens in our communities. While many lament the impact this has had on those clinging to hope for economic advancement under Democrat governance, others see it as a watershed moment revealing the heartless cruelty of the Republican leadership. Time will tell how this will all play out.
