Just in case anybody was left wondering after my previous posts on teacher pay, I don’t really have any sympathy for the Wisconsin teachers union. Considering that their average pay is over $100k per year, more than twice the average per-capita Wisconsin income, and the fact that there’s just not any money in the pot… sorry guys, but that’s life. When the money runs out, it runs out.
I’m probably one of the few people in the country who thinks that shutting down school for two days is the best thing they could do for their students, but only because I hope that very few of the students are actually going to the protests. If they’re smart, they’ll enjoy their time off and do something fun.
And the doctor’s excuse scandal is just one more argument against over-credentialization. Oh, sure, the credentialing boards will probably punish one or two high profile folks. But there’s simply no way to crack down en-masse on this abuse of authority. We allow require a doctor’s excuse now as an excuse for anything, why is anybody surprised that people have figured out how to game the system? Or, worse, that doctor’s as a group have figured out how to use this authority to enhance their own political beliefs?
