I started the day determined to have someone show me how to do my makeup, answer my questions, and sell me something. Mr. RedPill and I were set to go on a Fondue Date later that evening, and I wanted to look lovely. I got a few good tips from random YouTube videos on eyeshadow, but nothing felt really solid when I tried it.

I was originally going to hit up the MAC counter, because everyone seems to think MAC makeup is the best thing ever. I decided to try out an Ulta store first, because I heard they did demos, and there was one close by. However, after walking in and not really finding anyone that looked like they could help me, I walked out and went down the street to the Macy’s.

I thought all Macy’s had MAC counters, but apparently that’s not the case. There were several other companies selling their wares, so I decided to check out the Clinique counter. I sort of awkwardly and timidly asked them if they could show me how to do my makeup, because I wasn’t entirely sure of what I was doing, and got 2 blank stares. I got the feeling that these women thought I was utterly stupid for even uttering such a phrase. One left because she was on her lunch break, the other just looked at me as if I were a bother to her and asked me “So, what was it you wanted to buy?” I just kind of muttered “nevermind” and walked out, feeling very dejected. Why do women have to be so horrible to each other?

After doing some searching, the nearest MAC counter was 15 minutes away, so I headed there. Bare Minerals also has a store in that mall, and since I was most familiar with them, and scared of rejection once again, I decided to go there first. I was almost immediately greeted by one of their makeup artists, and when I explained my dilemma, she immediately said “Sure, no problem!”, sat me down, and asked me what products I already had, which ones I needed a bit more brushing up on, etc. She was a peach! She used the same foundation, bronzer, eyeliner, and mascara I already had, and found me a very complimentary blush. We experimented a bit with eyeshadow, and she showed me three different looks (normal everyday, a bit more dramatic, and smokey eyes). She showed me where the different shades go, and how to apply eyeliner without poking out an eyeball. I asked about lipliner, but she told me that she didn’t think it was necessary for me since I have pretty full lips. I asked about how to choose a lipstick/lip gloss, and she told me to choose based on the shade of blush I was wearing. Fascinating! I always thought I should somehow match to my eyeshadow. Makes a lot more sense now. I learned what all those different brushes do, and how important it is to blend eyeshadow. Blend blend blend!

Once we were done, I looked gorgeous, and I bought the blush and a foundation primer. Foundation primer! What a difference that stuff makes when you’re using loose powder! And theirs is incredibly light, I can’t even tell I put any on, other than my foundation actually staying on my face now.

Mr. RedPill and I went on to have a lovely fondue date, and I’m now wearing my facepaint makeup with more confidence. Thanks Bare Minerals! Your employees aren’t horrible human beings! Clinique can suck it.
