I went out grocery shopping and errand running yesterday. I was inspired to kick my wardrobe and makeup up a notch to do it, and observe those around me. Cute dress, knee-high boots, excellent makeup, hair looking ok (I’m still working on hair styles… now that I have my makeup perfected, hair is the next priority).
It didn’t really work out the way I was hoping. I seemed to get about as much attention as if I were wearing my usual casual attire. I realized some key things.
1) I usually do my damnedest to avoid eye contact with people. It was really hard to force myself to look at guys straight on. I tend to lower my eyes, keep my head down, and mutter “excuse me” a lot. I could probably give Canadians a run for their money on apologizing for absolutely nothing, if that stereotype is true.
2) When I’m focusing on something, I furrow my eyebrows and have this crazy looking scowl on my face. I’m doing it right now as I’m thinking about this post! It can’t be sexy in the slightest. I need to ask Captain M about this later.
3) Sundays are an awful time to try this experiment. Whole Foods and Sam’s were a freaking zoo. Which exacerbated my #2 problem, because I was focusing so hard on getting to where I needed to go without running into anyone.
Once I started consciously fixing my face into a non-scowl and started to look people in the face, I did get one good up-and-down look from a guy with his kids in Walmart. I may have gotten more looks than that, but I wasn’t doing my best at looking at people, so there’s no way to know. I smirked and looked away… I don’t think I can even begin to try to hold anyone’s gaze at this point. Too shy, too anxious.
Interesting experiment.
