What Is GHB?

GHB is basically death, date rape and genocide in liquid (sometimes powder) form. It has no medical uses and will kill you- probably instantly. Just like steroids. But that's just according to the mainstream media and millions of people that never tried the compound but own a television, half-a-brain and a mouth.

As usual, the mainstream doesn't quite get it right.

Like any substance- it has no moral intrinsic value. It is not "good" or "bad," it is a compound, a non-toxic compound that actually used to be available for purchase on the shelf at your local drug store. It was near the vitamins and the allergy medicines.

Despite the ongoing parroted misinformation that GHB is a drug like Heroin, LSD or MDMA (exstacy) with absolutely NO MEDICAL USES, it's actually a prescription drug. It’s called “Xyrem” (Sodium Oxybate) in most North American countries and generally known as “Alcover” in Italy. Before becoming a prescription-only medication it was actually available over-the-counter at CVS, Walgreens and Rite Aid until the late ‘90s.

Rumor has it- GHB was such a safe, inexpensive and effective sleep and depression/anxiety medication that it was a huge rival to pharmaceutical companies that want you dependent on their expensive drugs. The FDA thought so as well.

The actual name of the compound is- Gamma Hydrohybutyrate or Gamma Hydroxybutyric Acid; It is naturally produced by the body in small amounts and even in certain foods.

What Is GHB Used For?
(Medical Uses)

grandpa-simpson-sleeping.png Grandpa Simpson may want to consider 'Xyrem' for his narcolepsy issue.

Currently, there are only a handful of approved medical uses for GHB.

GHB is sometimes referred to as an “Orphan Drug,” which means it is a compound used to treat a “rare” medical condition.

It is recommended for the treatment of Narcolepsy, a disorder that causes bouts of extreme daytime sleepiness, which occur fast and without warning. You can be awake now and 10 seconds later you become compelled to a sleep that you cannot resist. Imagine how embarrassing that would be if you were talking to some chicks at the mall and fell asleep in the middle of a sentence like Grandpa Simpson (you’d probably smash your head against the floor too)...oops!

It has also been used to treat withdrawal from alcohol, since its feel good effects may ward off failure, as an anaesthetic, as a treatment for insomnia, to improve fitness, and probably its most promising effect, in treating depression.

However, mind you, GHB is a drug that needs to be taken very seriously- it can have potentially serious side effects, especially if you play around with it or mix and match to find a new “high.” It is not a drug for the uninformed, reckless people or idiots. That's part of the justification of making it illegal.

How Will GHB Make Me Feel?

Biologist, GHB expert, Claude Rifat lists the following 15 points in his essay "GHB: The First Authentic Antidepressant," I'll comment on these points from my past experience [in a legal country] with the compound-
(Claude was French, so the his English and grammar is different than a native speaker)

Keep in mind, we are talking about SAFE use.
Not abuse and not drugging yourself so much you fall asleep.

GHB: The Good

"GHB stimulates sociability, which means that you feel like communicating with other people in all ways: emotionally, intellectually, sexually. And from this communication you feel a very strong and deep happiness."

Good Looking Loser says: Absolutely. I would compare it to alcohol, with more of a raise in sex drive, more of a drop in anxiety, without the dis-coordination. If you take too much though- you will become less social. That is not different than alcohol or other depressants.

"GHB gives you a strong desire to touch others, physically and psychologically."

Good Looking Loser says: Yup, that's true too.

"Communication becomes extremely gratifying as you feel you want to become close to people, not to isolate yourself."

Good Looking Loser says: That's fairly true. It can make you very focused on whatever you are doing though. That can be- picking up girls or doing work by yourself.

"GHB induces a strong sense of beauty. Everything looks so beautiful, so vivid, so enjoyable, so pleasurable, so important, so deep."

Good Looking Loser says: Heightened senses and sensations. That is true, not always however. I'm not sure why this happens sometimes and doesn't happen other times. It's a nice feeling. Combines well with natural endorphins from sex or working out. Euphoria it's called.

"The perception of movement is enhanced."

Good Looking Loser says: Depends. While #4 seems to be true, I don't think this happens quite as often.

"Three-dimensional perception is enhanced and vision seems more clear, better than usual."

Good Looking Loser says: This is the "focus" thing that I mentioned in my comment of the 1st point.

"The contrast of colours between objects is increased. A yellow “pissenlit” (dandelion), or a rose, etc, situated in front of, say, green grass, looks brighter, more real, closer to you."

Good Looking Loser says: This what he was talking about in #4, it's true sometimes.

"If you are a man, a woman will look magnificent and very attractive. She may become just like a goddess to your eyes. Women will experience the same feelings towards men.

However, these kinds of feelings depend of your cultural background. For instance, a simple Siamese woman will not feel such intense feelings but will report that she feels drunk!

GHB is a very important tool in investigating the emotional background of a person. For instance loving people will become more loving while people devoid of these feelings will just feel in good mood, only. Some people may cry, which demonstrates that they have a lot of repressed material in themselves, etc. Crying under GHB is a very liberating experience because you can take out and release things which you normally keep deep inside and which thus hurt you. Crying under GHB takes away accumulated inner moral pains."

Good Looking Loser says: Claude seems like real nice guy, but what he's saying is true. GHB makes me want to fuck and lick girls in dirty places. The "crying" emotion, I can see that, but I haven't been upset when I used it. I suppose I've been so happy I wanted to cry- I just didn't thought.

"Sensuality becomes very intense. You want to touch, to kiss, to caress, to hold, to love, to hug, to make love. In summary, you want to contact others through any means available because you are just highly sociable!"

Good Looking Loser says: Yup, as I said- I want to lick them (aka make contact with them).

"According to Henri Laborit, GHB renders the clitoris more sensitive. Moreover, GHB increases love and sexual desires both in women and men."

Good Looking Loser says: Recent feedback- my housemates (females) and others girls I've been with confirm this. Vaginal receptors too.

"You can sometimes feel a deep sense of “meaningfulness”. Things become meaningful to you, even you are unable to scientifically define such a mystical feeling. This meaningfulness of reality is a very interesting phenomenon from a scientific point of view as it seems to show that there exists a “circuit” of meaningfulness in our nervous system. Non-specific activation of this circuit, under GHB, would give us a “deep” sense of “meaningfulness” which is, of course, imaginary."

Good Looking Loser says: Yeah, it's a different feeling than most anti-anxiety compounds (alcohol or benzodiazepines) where you "don't give a fuck," you do feel a sense of purpose. I always feel a sense of purpose, it's just heightened.

"GHB stimulates your recall abilities related to previous GHB experience. Each time you take GHB you can often clearly remember memories stored under another GHB context. Emotions are especially well-remembered and reexperienced. From these and other observations, I think GHB should be a tool of choice in psychoanalysis."

Good Looking Loser says: This is one that I don't quite agree with because my experience has been otherwise- and GHB is known for killing "memory" and that's why people want to tag it as the "date rape" drug. Compounds that work on the GABA receptors (alcohol, for example) can cause memory loss.

"Some people feel an urge to defecate after GHB, probably because of muscle relaxation! One of the first reactions from a colleague of mine, after GHB, is to go to the toilet!!!"

Good Looking Loser says: I don't know what he's talking about here.

"In fact, GHB induces a very pleasant sense of muscle relaxation, especially in the legs."

Good Looking Loser says: I think he's right. Once every week or so I work out my legs so hard that they are literally shaking, they'll spasm and even lock up if I'm having sex and not just laying on my back. It seems like the spasms happen less frequently and there is somewhat less pain. When I say "pain," I'm talking about the "good" pain of working out hard, not any sort of unnatural acute pain.

"One of the most remarkable action of GHB is that it gives you a strong desire to live and to remain alive, despite unfavorable conditions.

Good Looking Loser says: He's right. To be fair, this isn't unlike any GOOD drug that affect your mood in a positive way.

Additional threads to the ones included below testify that “GHB is an incredibly effective aphrodisiac." It gives you a great drunk-like feeling with incredible euphoria. It gives you a rock-hard, pumped up boner that never quits. Even if you cum, it comes roaring right back. It reduces sensation to your little head tremendously, allowing you to last forever. It tremendously increases libido. You will definitely want to have sex with just about every woman you see while on this. It will pump up your balls like little balloons. You will get a very deep, restful sleep while on it. You will feel great the next day.[ii]

GHB: User Experiences and Effects

GHB: The Bad

Of course, those were only the good uses... now for the bad.  The major use of GHB worldwide is in clubs; where it provides the feelings you typically get at a rave scene. It makes you horny, hyper and hungry, as I like to say, significantly removing your inhibitions. Seemingly like alcohol, but without the dis-coordination and “dumb” feeling.

But like other drugs called depressants, these stimulatory effects are only initial or dose related; higher doses produce the opposite effects, drowsiness, E.D and depression. In sports, GHB is proven to be able to raise growth hormone levels significantly; an effect much desired in training for the effects on strength, fat loss and muscle mass. However, numerous bodybuilders have testified that these effects are only theoretical, and do not pan out in real life.

GHB has also delivered promising results in the treatment of anxiety, and yes, while that would be a good thing, it finds use mainly in removing inhibitions and fears, causing you to do things you normally wouldn’t.
We’ll have an article or 3 about “GHB and Anxiety,” that is obviously the topic that most of us are interested in.

We shouldn't ignore it's stereotype as the "Date Rape" drug. This by no means should ever be promoted as one of the real uses, but just to let you know. GHB causes significant lapses in memory, and coupled with its judgment impairing abilities; it makes for a brutal female aphrodisiac. I just hope you guys never reach that low just to get some...right??

How Does GHB Work?

To explain how GHB works, it may be a good idea to know a teeny bit about receptors. However, if you don’t- no worries, I’ll make this walkthrough as painless as possible.

GHB is believed to act on two receptor sites within the body’s nervous system, namely the GHB receptor and the somewhat related- GABA subtype B receptor. To understand its effect on these receptors though, keep in mind that it acts as an agonist at both sites (meaning it causes changes) and that the GHB receptor is excitatory and the GABA type B being inhibitory. At best, the effects of GHB consumption are mixed. I mean, think of it; if one half is excitatory, and the other inhibitory, effects are likely to be contrasting.

The stimulation of the GHB receptors in the brain cause release of something called glutamate, a key excitatory neurotransmitter. At the same time, GABA-B receptors prevent muscular contraction, cause reduced sensory function. The accumulation of tryptophan in the brain is also believed to play a major role in its sedative potential.

In a nutshell- the effect you get from GHB consumption is dose related; lower doses cause excitation first, then depression, while higher doses cause the reverse. People who use GHB for its sedative properties may notice that they get a solid first couple hours of sleep, but then awake spontaneously like zombies seeking blood. Using lower doses results in a high followed by a low.

What Dosage Is Safe To Take?

In general, there is a wide acceptable range that users report as safe and effective; in the vicinity of 500 mg- 3500 mg per day. Recreational users usually use an average 1 to 3 grams, per dose, diluted in at least 8oz. of water (or other beverage). At this range, there may be effects of euphoria, increased sexual aggression and overall feelings of well being, with slightly higher doses being very effective for initiating sleep.

Gamma-butyrlactone (GBL) - the precursor to GHB is not meant to be consumed. It's super strong paint remover. But some guys can do so safely if they have 99.99% pure GBL without all the industrial solvents. A dose of .5-1ml of GBL is usually where guys start to test the waters. The "hyper masculine/no anxiety" dosage seems to be between .75 to 2ml for most guys. Interestingly enough, GBL hits harder and faster than GHB. If you are in a country where is it legal- you should be super careful to figure out EXACTLY what you are doing before you even consider "going out" while using either GHB or GBL.

You NEED to dose it accurately. A 1 to 3ml oral syringe (that is used to administer liquid medications to babies) that is available at your local drug store or a tiny liquid cough medicine measuring cup is an easy way to measure.

img-1786053370-6a7502fa9db980.31695876.gif GHB will last ~3 hours. On the later-half of hour 2, you may notice the 'Dopamine Rebound'

How Long Can It Work For Me?

One thing users frequently do, to stay on a high is take one dose after another, or flowing shooters. This obviously lends itself to potential overdose and 3+ hours of dreamland. More frequently, guys will take a dose of GHB and prepare another lower-dosed cocktail to sip on so they can keep the effects going. Carrying around a bottle of 'eye drops' and putting single drops into a water bottle is a more measurable means that some guys use.

The half-life (time that it lasts) of GHB is quite short! It is only capable of producing effects for about 2-3 hours, after which a potentially irritating-but-otherwise harmless, 'Dopamine Rebound' kicks in if you haven't re-dosed or come off slowly by sipping small amounts of the drink or other compound to counteractive the dopamine surge. Irritability, anxiety and a desire to be productive and active is characteristic to this temporary high-dopamine state. It can last a few hours.

The short half-life and the 'Dopamine Rebound' is often what encourages user to reload.

Is A Prescription Needed To Get GHB?

Yes. But even so, you will only get it if you can prove you are a narcoleptic or one anxious or depressed son of a female dog!

How Safe is GHB?

GHB, as a standalone, is considered relatively safe. After all- it used to be available an over-the-counter.

Yes, relatively, because if you know you’re about to embark on a bullshit mission, don’t expect peaches and candy. Using in the dose range that many others before have already tried is your best bet if safety is your concern, adrenalin junkies will probably go higher anyway. Deaths attributed to GHB have never been caused by the drug itself, but rather a cocktail of it and other stimulants or depressants (such as meth, ecstasy or alcohol). Fly high solo, and all will be well.

Black Market GHB Concerns

Pure GHB, once available on the shelves at health food stores was standardized and safe. Unfortunately, now that is it controlled, there is no standardization of quality or strength. It is potentially much less safe. Every batch can seemingly vary. GHB, especially non-standardized GHB, is not something you just want to squirt into a bottle and slug down. You'd

The same risk exists with GBL. While pure GBL is non-neurotoxic, it is powerful paint remover that may contain hundreds of other chemicals that were never meant to be ingested. Anything less than 99.9% pure GBL is not worth even the thought of taking and even still- you better sure you are getting JUST GBL. Experts and veterans still debate whether GBL should even be considered an option. Some people have reportedly ingested GBL for years and had absolutely no problem. Clearly they had 99.99% pure GBL.

Are Any Side Effects to Be Aware Of?

GHB carries similar potential side effects as just about all depressants (including alcohol).

The main concern is- since the dosage of GHB is so small, it is such a fine line between safely use and abuse (side effects).

Do Not Drink Alcohol (or other sedatives) with GHB

Even experienced users feel that mixing GHB with alcohol (or other depressants- Xanax, opiates, etc.) can be a recipe for disaster. Especially if reloaded every 2-3 hours with a progressive night of alcohol and other drugs. GHB, like all sedatives, will slow your respiratory (breathing) rate. Mixed with similar depressants, which also slow down your breathing, an overdose will making you literally STOP breathing. This is far worse than being "G'd out" and going to sleep for 3-4 hours and waking up refreshed.

The majority of accidental drug overdoses involve a severely impaired respiratory rate from mixing combinations of drugs.

When you hear that Mr. Celebrity died of an "accidental overdose," this is usually exactly what happened.

Good Looking Loser says: I want step in and tell you that: this is serious.
Unlike some of my friends in Hollywood, I do not mix drugs and alcohol. I just don't do it. If I have to do something like that- it means that I have a tolerance to the drug and I need to stop using. I make certain the any girls I'm with don't either (guys are way more stubborn). I'm sort of the "professor" in some of my social circles and have the opportunity and responsibility to prevent disaster. No one will ever die or hurt themselves on my watch.

I PINPOINT the dosage and timing of whatever I'm taking to avoid any sort of crash.
But if it comes- I'll deal with the hour or so of temporary irritability or crash.
Despite the increasing anxiety, I'll grab a random cute girl and go smoke cigarettes with her outside.

Ideally, I really like to have sex during the dopamine rebound stage, after an insane GHB-inspired release- things usually seem back to normal. Having a partner and sexually active/helpful roommates that understand is super helpful too. I once had a girl happily blow me for a good 90 minutes (some breaks) while I just relaxed and waited for the feeling to pass. Likewise- if a girl is in this stage, if she's cool, I'll eat her for awhile and get her off.

That's what friends are for!

In a sober state at night- I see guys and girls crashing, often while they are waiting for some overpriced food at Mel's or that shitty Brazil BBQ place on Sunset. I always think to myself- I'm so glad I don't feel that way. It sucks.

Do Not Combine GHB with Stimulants

You should not combine GHB with stimulants either.

As you know, GHB is a depressant/sedative. Like alcohol, despite being a "party drug," it slows down your central nervous system. While at a safe dose- it won't make you sleepy, you may get slightly tired or just want to chill. The tendency, especially among addicts/clubbers is to then use a stimulant to give them a boost of energy. While small amounts of caffeine may get some people over the hump and into the zone, anything else is definitely discouraged. Any sort of high-powered upper, Speed, Meth, Ecstacy, Adderall or large dose of ephedrine is highly discouraged.

On paper, it might make sense to combine uppers and downers. Upper to get you going. Downer to smooth out the anxiety. It might actually go just fine. The one time it doesn't- you will be in deep trouble. Even experienced drug users find that drugs "turn on them" at random times. They often reload the drug or add others to the mix instead of calling it a night and LIVING to play another day. They spend hours and hours compulsively "chasing" the right balance between uppers/downers, until they have taken way too much of each.

You heard it here- it is RARE that an overdose occurs when only ONE drug involved. The VAST majority of the time it's COMBINATIONS (particularly benzodiazepines and alcohol) that are responsible for a fatal overdose. If you feel something is wrong- Call 911. There is no return. Don't worry about what to tell them. If you ever wake up, you probably won't even fucking remember.

Tips for First-time Use (Dr. GBL)

This list is courtesy of Drugs-Forum.com "GHB, GBL and 1,4B"

  • If you are a first-timer, take half the amount others are taking. Make sure your first experience is with people you know and trust, and do it in a safe place (ie; not down some dark alley off K Road).
  • Don’t take this stuff on your own. When you and your mates stick together, it’s much easier to keep an eye on each other.
  • If you meet up with friends after a hit, tell them what you’ve taken. If you G out, they will know to get help more quickly.
  • There's no way to know the strength of a newly bought G. For that reason, don’t buy off random dudes in clubs.
  • If you are a woman, or have a small build you should always use less than your bigger friends.
  • Always measure and dose yourself on the conservative side. If it’s a new batch, treat it as if it's pure, at least until you’ve sussed out its strength.
  • Hang back AT LEAST an hour before deciding whether it’s working. Two hits in a short space of time is precisely how people end up at A&E with a tube down their neck.
  • Under NO circumstances should you drink booze while taking G.
