I am with a mixed group when one of the men says he’s hustling for money because his wife spent too much remodeling his kitchen.
Talley: How much did she spend remodeling it?
In Debt Guy (IDG): I gave her a budget of $100,000.
Talley: $100,000. That’s a lot of money.
IDG: Yeah, I had that, a guy owed me money and unexpectedly paid me so I gave her the $100,000 because she wanted to remodel the kitchen.
Talley: Then why are you hustling?
IDG: She went over budget . . . by $200,000.
Talley: What? She spent $300,000 on a kitchen? How much is your house worth?
IDG: Yeah. The house is worth $280,000.
Talley (laughing): Does your wife cook?
IDG: No, she doesn’t like to cook at all.
Talley: For $300,000 the kitchen better do it then.
IDG: Yeah.
Talley: Why any man would get married, I will never know.
At this point several of the women in the group interject about how marriage is to the benefit of the man with the usual list of supposedly “subservient” things women do for men (Cook, clean, laundry blah blah blah) that as far as I can tell damn few women actually do anymore. Frankly, I can do all that stuff myself in about 4 hours out of every week, why would I tether myself to a woman for that?
These same women will encourage other women to cheat in order to be sexually fulfilled and will encourage other women to leave their spouse if the marriage isn’t “working.” I’ve been in conversations with them about these very things.
The other guy in the group interjects at this point.
Other guy: Marriage sucks.
The women get ready to pounce.
Talley: You been married?
Other guy: Yeah, and divorced. Now some other guy is living with her. I don’t want my sons exposed to that?
Talley: Exposed to her living with a man out of wedlock?
Other guy: Yeah.
Talley: You just said marriage sucked, this is probably a good thing, your sons are going to learn that they don’t need to get married to get anything they want out of a woman.
Other guy, looks at me and a grin crosses his face: Dude, you’re right.
The women are now in full defense of marriage mode now.
It was an enjoyable evening.
