The last of the grandmasters in art, the first of the modern artists, Francisco Goya is an artist that every man should study, for his etchings called the Caprichos alone.
This one is titled Swallow it, Dog.
The dog? The unfortuante husband that has been cuckolded by his adultress of a wife. He is the man on his knees pleading for mercy before the church and society as she looks on mockingly as they prepare to give him an enema.
Goya was quite familiar with men’s issues and his art is a biting commentary of society and its treatment of men. The fact that these were done over two hundred years ago, speaks to the level of oppression and hostility men that aren’t the “elite” face.
The Caprichosi are often described as “unsettling” but what they really are is a warning.
The pre modern age equivalent of a men’s blog warning men of the perils they face in society. If there is a patron saint for game and for men, Goya probably qualifies.
I will place more of his art on this blog over time.
