I am with one of my girls.
She’s in college getting a psych degree.
At some point in the conversation she says to me: “Is a 140 IQ average, above average, genius or below average?”
To which I respond: “It is on the cusp of genius, if not genius. Above average.”
“You’re wrong.” She replies smugly.
“How so?” I ask, taking the bait.
“It is only average.”
“Average IQ is 100.”
“No it isn’t I just had a test, and the answer was that its average. Everything between 60 and 140 is average.”
“You don’t think there’s a huge difference between a 140 IQ and a 60? Or for that matter the difference between 120 and 140, let alone 100?
“There is, but they fall within the normal range.”
“What do you think average means?” I ask in disgust.
“Average means the typical range for people’s IQ to fall.”
I shook my head, “No it means that if you take all the IQs of all the people added them together and then divided by the number of people to get a number. That number being 100.”
“No. I will show you.” And she goes to get a text-book and comes back to show me that I’m wrong.
I read the paragraph she highlighted. I also read some more on the various intelligences and then I say, “You realize this is just a bunch of bullshit to make women feel better about themselves because they don’t test as high on the IQ as men.”
“No it isn’t. Besides I have a high emotional intelligence.”
“You do?” I laugh.
“Sometimes I just hate you.”
