I’ll start off by saying that an n=32 is insufficient to draw any valid conclusions, but such is the state of study and analysis these days. Over at Livescience.com that have a story up titled Single Women Still Feel Spinster Stigma, Study Finds.
Apparently these 32 women over the age of 30 feel that being single makes them both more and less visible in social settings. They go on to explain that these women felt exposed if attention was brought upon their single status, but invisible if people made assumptions about their status without asking. Basically they were unhappy either way. Where’s the surprise in that?
Other interesting tidbits. They are aware of the shrinking pool of men as they age. They seem to be constantly reminded that they are on a different life path from most other women, and their familial status is adversely effected (ok, that’s my interpretation). On the up side, after 35 these women have resigned themselves to being single and are happier for it.
