The LTR and I are pretty compatible when it come to our entertainment choices.  Either that, or she is willing to watch what I want to watch.  We are compatible, but by no means are our tastes identical.  Like many guys, I like to watch sports.  My favorite season being the fall and college football.  The LTR is more interested in the marching bands than she is the actual game.  I’m fine with that.

The LTR on the other hand has a copy of just about every production of Pride and Prejudice ever made.  Like most college educated women I know, if it’s Jane Austen, they’ll watch.  The stuff is definitely chick crack.  As I’ve mentioned before the LTR is also a big fan of Glee and a couple of other current shows on the idiot box.  Like many women, I don’t believe she picks up on the underlying misandry in most shows, nor do I believe she picks up on the continual push to redefine norms.

Something I’ve noticed in the process of watching the movies that invariably end up in the weekend movie recommendations.  If the movie deals with masculine themes such as honor, sacrifice, heroism, military life,  revenge, etc, but ignores or downplays feminine themes such as romance, family tragedy, of female empowerment then she’s really not interested.  If the film is gritty and shows facets of human nature that most people choose to ignore or pretend don’t exist, then she can’t seem to watch.

She’ll say things like, “I don’t want to watch another military movie” or “Not another documentary on xxxx.”  All of which makes me smile.  It’s at the point where she get’s agitated about a movie I’m enjoying that I know it’s good.  It is good because it doesn’t play to her prejudices.  Her desire for nice clean themes where all is resolved and everything is happy at the end.
