I was thinking about the statistic that only 40% of men reproduce historically, or whatever the word is to describe a trend that covers the entire course of a species existence.
I suspect we are fast approaching those numbers again.
I have a friend that works in an office of eighteen people. Of the nine men in the office, four are unmarried and not in relationships, one is unmarried and in a relationship, two are married and have step children but none of their own. Two are married with their own kids. A very small percentage of them have reproduced.
Contrast them with the nine women in the office of roughly the same age: Three are married with their own children, three are single moms, three are single and in relationships.
I know plenty of men, plenty of professional men, that are raising sons and daughters that are not their own. I wonder why they willingly take that mantle upon themselves. Are they so desperate that they will give their sweat for a child that is not their own, and forsake their genetic legacy?
Our society is filled with images of orphans being raised by noble men, and the sons and daughters become the man’s in spirit if not in flesh.
Yet this is not reality. The men are often pale shadows in these children’s lives. The children belong to the mother and they never become the spiritual heir of their step fathers.
If I feel sorrow for the men that are yoked unfairly by society, I feel pity for these men that sacrifice themselves for so meager a reward. That voluntarily cuckold themselves.
