It seems gay marriage is back in the news and on people’s minds of late. Both Talleyrand and I think the government has no business intruding into the realm of marriage, but that boat has long sailed. The governments of the world aren’t going to give that power back. It’s been said before, marriage is the only tri-partate contract where one party (the government) gets to change the conditions at any time during the lifetime of said contract. The churches were wrong to cede that authority over to the government, but that’s neither here nor there now.
So why would we be for something that arguable would hasten the collapse of western civilization? Honestly, I suppose hastening the collapse is as good a reason as any. It’s not likely to be stopped at this point. But like little children who are forbidden from playing with a desirable object, we think that the gay community idealizes marriage. Fantasizes about it. They view it through rose colored glasses because society won’t allow them to be married.
One could argue that marriage is just legalizing their de facto living arangements, but I’d argue there is a different mindset. Living with someone is an informal non-legally binding arrangement. Marriage, because it IS a contract regardless of whether it’s a church wedding or not, is legally binding. The stakes are a lot higher when deciding whether to end a marriage. By legalizing gay marriage they’ll get to experience the hell that is modern marriage.
Think about it. Who get’s the kids in the inevitable divorce? Two moms or two dads is going to complicate things for the family court system. What about alimony and child support? C’mon, open Pandora’s box, what’s the worst that could happen?
UPDATE: Maybe Novaseeker will comment on this additional thought. I’ve long believed that some of the push to legalize gay marriage was in order for the activists to have a large sledge hammer against the Orthodox and Catholic Churches to allow them to marry with in those faiths. If gay marriage becomes legal I thoroughly expect a raft of discrimination lawsuits against those churches for their stances on homosexuality.
