How Your Brain Falls In Love | Dawn Maslar | TEDx Boca Raton (2016/7/5) Length: 12 minutes
This talk is very interesting because it explains much of men’s and women’s sexual mating behaviors. It also has some far-reaching implications.
Here we’ll briefly go over a few of the RP concepts that are explained by it — including the weird and dank stuff.
Men vs Women
The short version is that men’s and women’s pathways to experiencing the love hormone, oxytocin, are different.
- A woman’s neurochemistry surges with oxytocin when she has sex with a man, whereas a man’s chemistry only becomes oxytocin dominant when he is committed to a woman.
- Women experience increased oxytocin during and after sex, binding her to the man who just gave her an orgasm. Women also experience oxytocin increases with baby raising activities, e.g. breastfeeding.
- Men experience their highest levels of oxytocin after sex, however, there are major roadblocks in oxytocin’s way that prevent the bonding hormone from doing its job. These are testosterone and vasopressin. These roadblocks are reduced when he is committed to the relationship.
This data provides a neurochemical reason for why Chads love em and leave em, and why women get spurned, and then become bitter lovelorn Alpha Widows.
Single men are high in both testosterone and vasopressin, so when an unattached man hooks up for some No-Strings-Attached sex with a woman that he doesn’t care much about, it really is a NSA sexual release for him. But for her, the sex alone leads to twoo wuv. But without his commitment, it just can’t work out, either neurochemically or socially.
The Effect of Commitment
The most interesting piece of information to me is that oxytocin does not cause men to fall in love, but it is the glue that binds him to a woman once commitment is there.
At that point, testosterone levels decrease, and vasopressin receptors have had time to develop. Now, when a man who is committed to a woman has sex with her, the testosterone and vasopressin barriers are sufficiently lowered so that he bonds with the woman to whom he has committed himself.
This is summarized in the equation (for males only),
Male Commitment + Sex => Feelings of Love / Oxytocin
God gave men a competitive drive to conquer, and once he’s conquered, and only after, then comes the gentleness to stay with his woman (assuming he’s a good man).
The Effects of Separation or Divorce
After thinking about the concepts further, and in light of today’s debased marketplace, we wondered if any of the neurochemical bonding processes are reversed if/when a committed relationship ends?
There has to be some mechanism for reversing the commitment and sexual bonding processes for men and women, respectively, because women destroy their marriages with their behavior, even preemptively via premarital sex, and Proverbs gives us multiple warnings about being married to a difficult woman.
So what happens with the neurochemistry in this case? Do the receptors atrophy from lack of use, or does the body block their use with another neurotransmitter?
Red Pill lore states that a woman who has sex with multiple men will quickly exhaust her ability to pair bond. This suggests that her oxytocin receptors have been desensitized or overloaded to the point of nullifying its effects.
Likewise, if a man’s commitment is sufficiently abused, then maybe a man’s testosterone and vasopressin reach a critical threshold that unravels the influence of Oxytocin. Or maybe it is the stress hormone, cortisol, which tends to decrease all these other hormones?
Being a Ball Busting B!tch Burns Up a Man’s Commitment-Induced Oxytocin
Let’s consider that last situation more closely.
A previous post, Wives reap what they sow (2022/1/12), discussed how women ruin their husband’s love for them by being way too over-the-top, b!tchy, cold, complaining, contentious, demanding, naggy, nasty, whiny, etc. Things like stark, embarassing disrespect, being bitterly ungrateful, playing the blame game, threatening divorce, and withholding sex, if done repetitively over time, will certainly have this effect. And yet, many foolish women ply these follies until they run their marriages into the ground, sometimes on purpose.
Worse, when men are subjected to this kind of treatment, once she pushes him over the edge, men will never again revive the feelings of love they once had for her.
When this happens, what goes on in his brain chemistry?
I’ll guess that Men’s neurological response to this abusive treatment is very similar to the effect that riding the carousel has on women — his oxytocin receptors are desensitized to its effects, and any pair-bonding that once existed is thereafter ruined.
Further, the ongoing stress of living with such a woman keeps his cortisol high. This is why men are so relieved after separating from Ball Busting (ex)wives, and why some men give up on women after having such an experience.
Sexual Denial and Frustration
For instance, think about the implications for women who deny their husbands sex. Let’s remember that being denied sex is one of the chief reasons for infidelity among men.
Obviously, the bond breaks over time, but there is a point where the man’s brain flips from being “committed” to “uncommitted”, or more precisely, “less-committed than what is adequate” or “NOT committed enough” to remain faithful / monogamous.
So then, given the opportunity, the neurochemical door is wide open to him having an affair — or else succumbing to clinical depression.
Cheating
We also wondered why men are more likely to tolerate infidelity than women are, even though a wife’s unfaithfulness is much more damaging to the relationship than when the man steps out.
I would hypothesize that the long, slow death of the relationship that results from a wife’s constant daily arguing, combativeness, nagging, and withholding reverse the commitment and bonding chemistry in a man’s brain much more than a man who is blindsided by his wife’s infidelity.
In the blindsided scenario, the neurological pathways probably still remain intact, which would make me think that men who have been cheated on would be more likely to still love their wife even after she blew up his world when compared to the sexless marriage husband whose bond has had time to atrophy or completely deteriorate.
I’d summarize my hypothesis as:
- A slowly grown connection followed by a fast, sudden break => some emotional connection still left.
- A slowly grown connection followed by a long, slow break => little to no form of emotional attachment still left.
Open Relationships
In a previous Study of Open Relationships (2015/9/8), Jack concluded that people are either one of two types — either they could accept having an open relationship, i.e. sharing one’s partner with others sexually, or they could NOT accept it. Those who can accept ORs are able to have a separate emotional experience concerning either sex or love, whereas, those who could not accept OR’s, tend to associate sex and love together. Those people who associated sex and love together, were also likely to see marriage, or at least a committed monogamous long-term-relationship (LTR), as a sacred union of these two aspects of a relationship. Whereas, those people who did NOT associate sex and love together, tended to have had a heartbreaking experience in life (e.g. coming from a broken family, or having been rejected multiple times, or monkey branching in preference for another partner), and being heartbroken in the process.
This makes sense from a neurological perspective. People who have had their oxytocin receptors burned out through some sort of trauma (abuse, cheating, divorce, familial dysfunction, sexual denial, etc.) find it easier to separate sex and love, and thus are more willing to entertain the notion of getting an oxytocin fix anywhere they can find it.
A man’s commitment, in this case, devolves into a commitment to himself, his lifestyle, and/or his own self-satisfaction, rather than to the relationship(s) or the women involved.
Cuckoldry
While some men merely tolerate a wife’s cheating and cuckoldry, some men actually get off on it. I suspect that there are more men like this than are willing to admit, or even what we might think.
The Male Commitment + Sex => Love / Oxytocin connection might also explain why some guys enjoy watching their GF/wife getting hammered by other men, and probably some other bizarre perversions that we’d rather not get into here.
Well, how might this happen?
First of all, I’ll guess his commitment provides the oxytocin, as described above, and the challenge of staying committed to her, in spite of obviously being on the losing end of the intrasexual competition, keeps his fire stoked somehow. If he withdraws that commitment because of her infidelity, then he’ll also lose the commitment-oxytocin-associated high, so he’d rather stay with her, despite the shame.
Secondly, these men get a dopamine and oxytocin rush from watching her F-n-cum, just like the satisfaction a man would get from watching a P0rn model being ridden by another man. Same difference.
Third, because Sex is a necessary part of the equation, I have to assume she keeps feeding him some sort of sexual stimulation (by letting him watch, or by participating in a threesome, for example) and never leaves him wanting. As long as she can keep his oxytocin stoked up and the combined effect of other hormones kept in check, then he’ll be agreeable with whatever perversity will satisfy her own oxytocin surge — and his in turn vicariously.
With practice, or perhaps simply a lack of other options, these men learn to get into it.
BDSM
Lastly, I’m sure BDSM has a neurochemical component as well.
In this case, I imagine that testosterone and vasopressin are not completely inundated, but instead, rise in proportion to oxytocin, and if so, I’ll guess there are three conditions in play.
- A personal history or familiarity with abuse and/or control.
- A high degree of sexual polarity, and/or domination dynamics.
- A partner who is cooperative and like-minded about this activity would also be a necessary piece of the equation.
- The taste is slowly developed with practice over time.
Conclusions
The experiences that induce oxytocin are different for men and women. Women through Arousal + Sex, and men through Commitment + Sex.
Reality suggests that oxytocin receptors are fragile, sensitive, and susceptible to burnout. Profligate sex burns out women. Disappointing commitments burn out men.
Overall, it appears that humans desire to maintain a certain balance of specific hormones, so they’ll pursue activities and relationships that create that effect, even if only temporary. This is where addictions come into the picture.
It could be fun to tease out some of these concepts further and see if there is any behavioral support for them. However, I doubt that there is any scientific research or neuroscience data on brain chemistry when it comes to adultery, cuckolding, difficult wives, sexless marriages, BDSM, and so on.
