I’m happy to announce that I had a great time during our little Spearhead rendezvous in San Francisco. A half dozen of us spent time together eating, conversing and getting to know each other at the Grand Hot Pot Lounge. Despite being from various and diverse occupational, religious and ethnic backgrounds and spanning three decades in ages represented, we got along as only men united in common cause can. I am also pleased to be able to honestly say I personally liked every single attendee.

I’d like to give some credit to Brian for providing the persistence and motivation that convinced me to follow through on the idea, and thank everyone for coming. For those who couldn’t make it, maybe there will be a next time in the Bay Area. I hope that’s the case!

Motivated readers might want to think about setting up dinner meetings in their own locales. If they all turn out as well as ours did tonight, I think we’d soon see something productive emerge from these face to face meetups. There’s really no substitute for personal interaction, and that’s too often forgotten in these days of smartphone/internet obsession.

One final observation I’d like to add is that keeping the meetup all-male was crucial in creating such a productive, fraternal atmosphere. There’s always plenty of time for the women – they make sure of that – so sometimes we have to take care to create a space of our own.
