We have all heard the old feminist saying “All men are rapists” at some point in our lives. This quote first appeared in “The Women’s Room” by Marilyn French and is spoken by a fictional character in the book. The statement was picked up by feminists of the time and led to many notable quotes such as “Heterosexual intercourse is the pure, formalized expression of contempt for women’s bodies. ” by Andrea Dworkin, and “I claim that rape exists any time sexual intercourse occurs when it has not been initiated by the woman, out of her own genuine affection and desire. ” by Robin Morgan.
Eventually the feminists realized that making bold statements like “All men are rapists” would be their Achilles Heal and they distanced themselves from it. Recently I saw a new incarnation of this old feminist idea in the form of a radical feminist blog post listing the behaviors that indicate that a man supports rape.
This contradictory list includes enough normal male behavior to ensure that virtually all men fall into the category of rape supporter. So maybe not all men are rapists, but we apparently all support our raping brethren. Here is an abbreviated list of some of the more ridiculous items on her blog:
A man is a rape-supporter if…
* He has gone to a strip club.
* He is anti-abortion.
* He is pro-”choice” because he believes abortion access will make women more sexually available.
* He watches pornography in which women are depicted.
* He watches any pornography in which sexual acts are depicted as a struggle for power or domination, regardless of whether women are present.
* He characterizes the self-sexualizing behavior of some women, such as wearing make-up or high heels, as evidence of women’s desire to “get” a man.
* He expresses enjoyment of movies/musicals/TV shows/plays in which women are sexually demeaned or presented as sexual objects
* He supports sexual “liberation” and claims women would have more sex with (more) men if society did not “inhibit” them.
* He ever subordinates the interests of women in a given population to the interests of the men in that population, or proceeds in discussions as if the interests of the women are the same as the interests of the men.
* He argues that people (or just “men”) have sexual “needs.”
* He discusses the “types” of women he finds sexually appealing and/or attempts to demean women by telling them he does not find them sexually appealing.
So now we as men are supporters of rape if we are pro-life or pro-choice, if we enjoy watching sexy women in movies and TV or if we don’t find all women sexually appealing, if we think women are dressing up to attract us or if we encourage women be sexually liberated. We as men are also supporters of rape if we can’t get any, give up and turn to (non-rape) alternatives such as strip clubs and porn. Is it even possible for a man to not fall into this feminist definition of rape supporter? No, and that is the point. Radical feminists believe that all men are either rapists or supporters of rape (aka potential rapists). They believe there is nothing men can do to escape their natural evil behavior of raping or helping others to rape.
My favorite part is when she states a man is a rape supporter if he discusses what type of women he finds sexually appealing. She is saying that a man shouldn’t have a preference when it comes to how a woman looks, I guess he should just wait for a feminist to assign him a woman to serve and provide for regardless of her looks or weight but should not expect anything in return (like sex) because otherwise he would be a rape supporter.
It is no longer possible for feminists to state that all men are rapists or even that all men support rapists without receiving significant backlash in the mainstream media and giving MRA material to attack them with. So instead they make a 30 point list of all the behaviors that indicate a man supports rape such that every man violates at least on item on the list. Therefore allowing feminists to say all men support rape without actually saying “All men support rape. ”
