Just a quick recommendation for a theme appropriate beverage for the holiday about all things Turkey…
If you’ve never tried it before, you might want to give this mid-range priced ($30-$40), small batch, Barrel proof, Kentucky Straight Bourbon a go. At 108.4 proof, it may be a little intimidating for the folks used to 80 proof whiskeys. Rest assured, while a splash of water or some ice cubes may help you mellow out the initial burn, at least give this whiskey a neat little sip, before you dilute it.
You may be surprised that it’s not as harsh as you would first think…
Here’s the description of Rare Breed from the Wild Turkey Distillery:
Rare Breed is a “barrel-proof bourbon,” meaning it is bottled directly from a variety of barrels at the proof it reaches in those barrels, with no added water to lower the proof or dilute the flavor.
This bourbon is a unique marriage of Wild Turkey 6-,8- and 12-year old stocks, which give the whiskey a rich, exceptional flavor that is remarkably smooth, considering its high alcohol content. It is assertive with hints of light oranges, mint and tones of sweet tobacco that will remind you of your grandfather’s pipe-bowl. The finish is long, warm and nutty and lingers in the mouth with hints of hot peppers and well-toasted whole wheat bread.
Jimmy Russell keeps his Rare Bred in the freezer so he doesn’t have to add ice, which would melt and ultimately dilute the flavor.
I don’t know about you folks, but I intend to sit down on my porch after digesting a healthy portion of Norbest turkey and all the thanksgiving fixins’, and have me a dram or two of some Rare Breed Wild Turkey, and enjoy the delicious interplay of complementary flavors it will impart by puffing along with a Padron 5000 Maduro cigar I just picked up from my local tobacco dealer.
And when the wife grumbles about the smell of the cigar smoke drifting into the house, I’ll just holler “Pipe down Woman, and bring me another dram of Rare Breed!”
