This hubbub about the Athens Ohio sex tape largely escaped my attention. I had a busy couple of weeks, and although I heard about it and skimmed a few comments on it, I mentally tuned it out because the combination of the words “rape” and “Ohio” have become so tiresome and repetitive over the last year or so. When you’ve read enough of this stuff, it all just runs together into one big, screaming rape obsession.
However, on reviewing the case today, I found that there are some interesting and new aspects to it. For one thing, there’s video, and in addition a grand jury made it pretty clear that the accusation was, in fact, false. Feminists are still sticking their fingers in their ears and hollering “RAPE!”, naturally, but this time it’s just making them look like idiots.
However, a few of us aren’t coming out of this looking too hot, either. It seems that Peter made the national news by republishing some 4chan speculation that the girl involved is some sorority girl named Rachel who bears a passing resemblance to the girl who was enjoying some oral in public on that fateful night.
Sigh…
First, anonymous is just as quick to jump the gun on alleged male rapists as it is on false rape accusers. It’s a lynch mob mentality that we really ought to avoid for obvious reasons. If it can be turned against a girl, it can also be turned against a boy, after all. There’s no justice in this kind of thing.
I am very skeptical about the allegations that this Rachel had anything to do with it. I feel pretty bad for her. Getting slandered for the first time sucks, badly. When it happened to me in my divorce it pretty much knocked the wind out of me. I trust it did the same to you, Peter. Think about that. Don’t amplify the pain; try to rectify injustice. I’m growing tired of seeing a process I helped set into motion descend into barbarism. Yes, what men have been subjected to is barbaric, but given some of the rhetoric that’s been going around I’m starting to wonder whether the proposed cure is much better than the disease.
However, if you can’t find the accuser, and you really want to train your guns on a worthwhile target, why not aim them at the woman who encouraged this false accusation as part of her campus activism? A woman with far more authority than any sorority girl or undergrad inebriate copulating on the avenue in plain sight (for the record, I’d guess the accuser is a budding alcoholic, and she will pay dearly over her life for her problem).
According to A Voice for Male Students, Dean of Students Jenny Hall-Jones, an outspoken feminist, has been indoctrinating students in the false dogma of “rape culture” and tweeting indignant, sarcastic responses to the article in The Atlantic that wisely counseled young women to avoid getting drunk.
Instead of wasting our time attacking some girl who is probably entirely innocent, we should be asking why Ms. Hall-Jones, who apparently thinks there’s nothing wrong with female students getting drunk, has such an important job at Ohio University. Doesn’t she bear some responsibility for this incident? If the girl’s inebriation contributed to her shameful exhibitionism, and her dogma about “rape culture” convinced the girl to make a false accusation, the dean should be fired, if only for liability reasons.
You’d think a responsible Dean of Students would care about her female students, and encourage them to drink responsibly if at all. She would also refrain from creating an atmosphere of hysteria that could incriminate innocent male and female students alike. On the one hand, she encourages problematic behavior, and then offers a witch-hunt as a solution to the inevitable fallout. What an awful choice for dean. And still the feminists have the nerve to tell me there’s something wrong with my skepticism about the value of college for our daughters…
Let’s drop this worthless speculation about some young woman who, in all likelihood, didn’t hurt a fly and aim for bigger game. I don’t care if acting like a madman gets us more attention; it’s really pretty selfish to give the opposition a tool they can use to bludgeon us in the public sphere for the sole purpose of gaining a few thousands of page views.
