Readers have spoken through the poll I put up on Tuesday concerning comments. A plurality preferred open comments, but slightly more than half wanted some additional controls on the comments. Some readers suggested simply making some minor changes to the rating system and the organization of comments. Taking all into account, I’ve come up with what I think is a reasonable compromise: comments will remain open, but only registered subscribers will have the option of voting on them. Fortunately, I’ve found some software that will allow me to implement this.
However, because we technically have over 800 registered subscribers, many of whom are probably only occasional users, I’m going to have to pare the list down to those who have contributed either content or support to the site, because they should automatically have a vote. I’m not sure exactly how I’ll do this yet, but it will probably involve emailing all subscribers and asking whether they want to remain registered users. Additionally, I’ll contact those on the email list and ask if they want to participate.
I’d like to run the site as something of a republic, with all those who have a stake in it having a say. With this setup, it will be easier for me to get an idea of what supporters expect and want regarding content and direction (there will be some important tools besides simply voting available to registered subscribers). When it comes down to it, I am working for our readers, and to do a proper job I have to have a better mechanism in place whereby I can hear them.
