According to the NY Times, in only 25 years, the proportion of never-married young women has nearly doubled, leaving nearly half of all women from 25 to 29 unmarried.
In the meanwhile, divorce rates have eased, but this is clearly a result of the much lower marriage rate. In fact, the divorce numbers have only dropped a measly 5% since 1980, which suggests that marriage is an even worse bet today than it was when divorce rates were at their highest.
The NY Times article suggests that women are cooling to the idea of marriage, but the recent tsunami of articles disparaging young men for failing to “grow up” indicates that, in fact, it is young men’s reluctance to wed that is the deciding factor.
