Jodi Arias has been convicted of murder in the first degree for the brutal killing of her lover, Travis Alexander. Perhaps we have turned a corner, and the days of smearing dead men to excuse their wives and girlfriends for capital crimes are drawing to a close.

Feminists often speak of “blaming the victim” in rape trials and cases, but there could be no more blatant example of this than Jodi Arias’s defense, in which she attempted to explain away her vicious murder, which involved stabbing Mr. Alexander dozens of times, shooting him in the head and cutting his throat by calling him “abusive.” What nerve…

Let us hope that Ms. Arias can come to repent for her crime, and do what she can to make amends before she meets her fate. Her attempt to justify and rationalize the murder argues for the most severe punishment, but perhaps she can show enough contrition during sentencing to save her life.

Mercy is now in God’s hands — she can expect no more from men than she extended to Travis Alexander.
