I just dropped my kids off after spending spring break with them, and although I know I’m going to miss them for the next couple weeks, it will be nice to get back to work again. One of the screwed-up things about being a divorced father – or any father these days – is that work and family life are so distinct. I think things are coming back around in that regard, but it’s still a matter of choices and sacrifice in one way or the other. I chose my kids, and I’ve paid for it dearly, but I think it’s worth it. Despite having to fight for every hour, and enduring a lot of abuse, I’m pretty happy to be in their lives. Some men see it differently, and I can’t condemn them given what they put fathers through these days, but I just don’t know whether I could live in anything but an intolerable sort of purgatory without seeing my kids regularly.
I got to take my kids on their first flight, and my son absolutely loved it. The experience inspired a book he made and gave to me yesterday. I must admit that I am very proud of him for creating his first illustrated book. One of the best things about being a parent is that it gives you the opportunity to see things through young eyes again. All the cynicism just falls away when the little ones are there and enthusiastic about the world.
So forgive me if the rest of you don’t share my enthusiasm for my first-grader’s artwork, but it makes it all worth it to me. I am quite proud that he put this together all by himself (we’ll work on the spelling later).
First is the title page:
Closle Planes and Ragler (Colossal Planes and Regular)
Next, the “Closle 4,000,000 USA” (originally 4,000, but he thought it could use some more zeros):
I’d happily show more, but at risk of looking like one of those ridiculous parents and violating my son’s copyright, I think I’d better leave it at that.
PS: Thanks for the help grandma and grandpa
