TOP DEFINITION

parental investment theory

Parental investment theory, proposed by Robert Trivers in 1972, holds that the sex which invests more in raising offspring (typically the female, due to gestation and childbearing) is more selective when choosing a mate, while the less-invested sex competes more intensely for mating access. It's frequently cited in red pill circles as the evolutionary basis for hypergamy.
