I'll start out by saying my son is five and starts kindergarten in the fall, I'm already of the mindset that now is not the right time. I've seen this debate pop up across Reddit several times and I've seen mentions within this subreddit to it but I haven't yet seen anything about when I should seriously consider the possibility. I'm hoping some of you may have resources on hand from previous debates you may have been involved with I can look at.

I've received concerns from his mother (not by any means a credible source) and his aunt that his attention span may be a bit short. While I am not truly concerned at this point I have noticed that in particular circumstances he does seem to be a bit short. My observations would lead me to believe a lack of interest in certain things not a lack of ability to focus. We play video games together and he definitely has no problems staying focused on the task at hand when we're burning through a mission on LEGO Star Wars. However, as his first days in a real school are coming near I am worried that I may receive comments from teachers and/or school counselors that suggest I should consider having him evaluated and (depending on the results) medicated. I'm aware that there are fundamental differences in the development of boys and girls (though I don't have any girls myself) and I've read about and seen more than enough people who were medicated for the wrong reasons. At the same time, ADD and ADHD are very real conditions and can be detrimental to an individual's ability to be successful if not properly handled. How long should I stand my ground? At what age is it appropriate to have a child evaluated? Also, does anyone know of any signs that I can look out for this early on that may indicate a problem? Resources would be helpful; as I said with school being right around the corner it's a growing concern of mine.
