Throwaway account.

I was just in family court to adjust financial support because I am now unemployed. This is in the east coast u.s., by the way. I am wondering if there is anything else I can do about this.

The custodial parent, the mother, who is also not employed was receiving support that included my share in child care expenses so that she can go to work. She wasn't working for a while or looking for a job, and took care of the child herself but the court didn't see fit to return those additional payments (in addition to the child support) for expenses that weren't made.

Moreover, because I am not employed my support should have been reduced, but it was reduced only for a month before the judgement, not from the time I lost my job, and suffered loss of income.

So in short, I was paying for expenses not made based on a salary that I am not earning. The magistrate didn't even note that there was anything unusual about this.

Finally, there was no consideration for my financial ability to pay these amounts. Indeed having to pay these amounts would very likely get me into debt, etc.

Live and learn. In any other context, asking for refund of payments not made is considered a serious issue.

TDLR: Family court upheld charges for paying my share in child care expenses that were not made, and based on a salary that I am no longer earning.
