There are events, grants, programs, and awards just for you!

i.e 'affirmative action'

Women can get respect in IT, but there's really two types. There are the serious coders & technical women who actually enjoy it all. Then there are also the 'HR' and 'doc writer' type just in it for the money.

The ones who actually love the tech get respect.

The ones who know it's just easy money don't.

My experience from many years in the tech industry is that this article is right on. I've held a number of senior positions where I was responsible for implementing preferential treatment for female tech workers during recruiting, hiring, promoting, and appointing.

Being female in technology is a huge advantage. Women with tech degrees are recruited much more heavily than males, and as a result are paid higher starting salaries. Female tech workers that show any promise receive extra mentoring and are put on a management fast track. At industry conferences and committees, a young, inexperienced female will be appointed to committees and boards ahead of more experienced males, just to get some female representation. During a recession, female workers are not immune to layoffs, but layoffs of female workers receive extra scrutiny from HR and senior management.

It is true that you stand out more, but it is not such a great thing, because of people like wavevector, who automatically assume that your abilities are inferior before they even hear you speak/see any of your work. I avoid this by working in a fairly small group where everyone knows me, what I do, and everything I've done in the last 5 years. At this point, things like gender and ethnicity no longer matter and I definitely prefer it this way.

There are pros and cons. The pros are that you are more likely to get hired and watched after by HR. The cons are that men will think that you don't know anything/are less competent than a man in a similar position.

But yet the same, you have articles like that one from the woman who was complaining about how few women were wealthy.

Again, how many women do you see taking advantage of all of these initiatives for entrepreneurship? It's the same thing regarding Title IX; all of these things are put in place for women, and they don't take advantage of them, but yet and the same, it's the fault of the men for the lack of increase.

The truth of it is that a large number of women are just plain afraid to get their hands dirty and want everything handed to them on bended knee.

You wanted equality; you got it!

Get off of your ass, go get the money your damn self, and stop taking it from us!
