I've recently had a levy place on my checking account. It occurred late Friday evening and of course I can't really do much about it until Monday morning. I was told by the bank that it was initiated by the Dept. of Public Welfare so I can only assume it is for arrears owed on child support. These are arrears which are supposed to be paid off over time by an additional payment every month to my child support obligation. Which I pay.
My grievance isn't with child support. It's with the subtle ways that the government agencies legally harass and make lives miserable for people. Because of this levy which I'm sure was just blindly applied without consideration for my actual payment history has caused a utility bill and internet bill to bounce. It may cause my daughter's daycare and dance class checks to bounce if I'm not able to have the levy removed and my money returned. Several weeks ago a bench warrant was issued for me. I contacted the local sheriff's department and they helped me find out the reason for the warrant. A child support payment was sent by me on time and received by the agency responsible for distribution on time. That agency did not distribute the funds on time and a warrant was then requested and issued for my arrest. Thankfully the Sheriff's office worked with me and everything was cleared up within a few hours. These are just 2 examples of harassment I've faced in the 8 years I've been paying child support.
My reason for creating this post isn't just to vent and receive sympathy from the Men's Rights community. My reason is to reach out to the community to really build solidarity. I can't seem to find any organizations that work on the behalf of only men and are as popular or as affective as some of the organizations that work on behalf of women.
From my experience in the court system fathers are treated very poorly. I think a lot of the current laws that have worked against fathers may have been necessary at one time. We've all heard the horror stories of "deadbeat dads" that were every where in the 80s and 90s. Or maybe those stories were used to help create the system. Whatever the reason I think its time that an organization(s) be created to use the legal system to change the legal system. Yelling and screaming about how terrible things are does nothing except alleviate our anger. Providing links or advice is helpful but still leaves us alone in our struggles. No man is an island right?
If this is something that sounds interesting to you or you would just like to post some of your horror stories please respond. However, if you are a deadbeat dad please don't.
