Fear/anxiety/guilt. My coworker complained to my boss that I was two minutes late, so I told him I was being suspended because it was my third offense. My boss didn't give a flying fuck and I'm not being suspended, but you should've seen his face when he thought I'd miss a couple days pay because he complained about two minutes. He's a nice guy--he just needs to chill the fuck out.

It's the difference between:

You should try the kale smoothie, it's so healthy!

and

Or how about the strawberry milkshake, it's delicious!

The logical choice is the healthy one. But it doesn't come with the adjective "delicious". Most people will want something satisfying their emotions (good taste) rather than their logic (healthy) - unless of course they are fitness freaks, in which case their fitness is an emotional thing.

The main appeal to emotion is to convince the other person that what you want is also what they want. You should not focus on the fact that it's what you want, but how it would benefit the other person (plant the emotional seed). Then let them draw the conclusion that it's what they want.
