Why not to take the -best- from each gender pool, instead of weighting it based on who applies? A Lottery? Really? What happened to admittance essays or looking at grades or extra-circulars?

I may be misunderstanding this, but I dont think the courts had a problem with the affirmative action part. Had the system been set up in such a way that men were given extra admission points (if there was a point system) for being an underrepresented group, i dont think it would have been overturned. However, this system was a weighted lottery, effectively meaning that if they put names in a hat to draw, men would get to put in two entries for each woman's one. The argument was that this effectively excluded women.
