Are you aware a father can cash in on the mothers maternity time? He can use six months of her maternity leave (there are some restrictions to this but I am not a lawyer).

The men don't get so long because in times past they were not usually the main carer and people didn't give a toss about things like a father spending time with his kids - before you start blasting, I am not saying it's correct - but if you're going to tell me it never happened I will wonder which cloud you live on. Women are generally the main carer even today because the man will be the main breadwinner - it's like this in working class families all across the country whether you agree or not.

You also have to take into account that the govt is fond of floating studies around to tell us that children need more attention, more bonding - where is the time for this supposed to come from? They have most likely been told by some think-tank to increase maternity leave to a/ encourage falling birth rates and b/ enable the child to have a better start in life by also enabling a parent to spend more time with the child and aid in its development in early stages. Hopefully so that in future, we don't end up with what we have now - a bloody mess where it seems like a lot of people don't take responsibility for their kids development anymore because they are too damn busy working. I am sure that paternity leave will be increased - the fact they increased maternity leave when there were many arguments against should give men a bit of hope. I've heard that the EU would like paternity leave increased - it is easy to find out who your Euro rep is and write to them.

It should also be noted that many women do not take the full leave. Just thinking through my female friends there, most were back at work within a few months, I can't think of one who took such a long time off. Even although there are laws it seems that women can still lose their jobs to "restructuring" and such when really everyone knows it is because they had or are due to have a baby. Fear of that can make a woman go back to work before she is physically ready.
