Within the last week I read a post entitled "please sign and share this", it was for a petition to expand the UK rape laws. If a man was raped by a woman the offence would come under Section 4 of the Sexual Offences Act 2003 rather than Section 1 (Causing a person to engage in sexual activity without consent vs rape).
I believe so far two petitions have received over 10k signatures (one from several years ago that got, I believe, just over 14k signatures) and another from about seventeen months ago that received just over 24k signatures.
Both received similar canned responses with the former being pretty brutal. Both focused on the maximum sentencing guidelines whilst ignoring the stigma surrounding such crimes, how statistics will be compiled and, any strategies for reducing rape will revolve around correct reporting
Simply put it's treating two demographics differently. It's using a term other than rape to describe a rape when happens to a man by a woman
The current petition just has 341 signatures and it's due to end within the two weeks. Which means any similar petitions can't be re-submitted for six months.
I didn't know about the current petition until I read that vague post from five days ago. By the time it will be resubmitted, people will have moved on or forgotten about the new petition. Each time it's re-submitted it's been a whole year. One of the main factors holding men's rights back is working together to an extent to share information and engagement. I've read a few project ideas, but they never seem to come to fruition. I can't describe it other than depressing af
Here's the info for the current petition:
The current legal definition of rape is penetration with a penis of the vagina, anus or mouth. This definition prevents victims of sexual acts, which did not involve a penis, or physical penetration, from receiving justice. This requirement is outdated and fails to accommodate for these individuals.
We call on the Government to change the definition of rape to include all forms or sexual acts, even when it is non-penetrative and has not involved a penis.
