This is going to be kind of a rant, but I always say we should see more to improving our selves on this subreddit, and worrying about what the fuck some bitches are doing to men that allow them to walk all over them. I think the largest contributor to the reason many guys initially think the way to get the girl is to sacrifice all their own goals, needs, and wants and put them on the pedastal is the media.
We've all seen it; those Disney-esque films that made us believe that we will get a girl by being the weak, uninteresting loser protagonist that ends up getting the girl at the end of the movie by pathetically confesses his love and further pedastalizing usually seen. Alot of these films seem to be the big thing now, romanticizing the idea that if you stay the underachieving, awkward man-child, at the end of it, you will magically defeat the big, bad alpha jock, and live happily ever after when the girl realizes you were the guy she was looking for all along.
One example that is stuck in my mind, is the American Pie series, namely the first two. Here we have the protagonist, an awkward loser spending the screentime of both films desperately attempting to get with the hot foreign exchange student, when he finally has a chance to in the second film, what does he do. He goes back to the weird, less attractive band geek, because of some "special bond" that formed or whatever the fuck. In another scene, two of the character have a chance to score with two bisexual girls. In some turn of events, the two guys are forced to make out if they want sex from the girls. What self respecting man would go so low just for some pussy?
Anyways, I'm positive you guys already realize life ain't all sunshine and rainbows, and about "true love". Don't take these movies as some sort of roadmap to life, remember they are entertainment. Just like a video game is fantasy, so are these.
