Crosspost "My friend [25 M] of 5 years suggested that I [25 F]"bleach my skin"" from /r/relationships:

Just as the title says.

Damn, now this sucks.

So, this has been the story of my life for quite a while now. As you may have assumed, I am of a darker skin tone, think, a Beyonce skin tone. For some reason, that seems to be a problem? I don't get it...I am of South Asian descent and that's the most common skin tone that we have...I just don't expect what colour people expect me to be.

So, like the title says, my male friend of 5 years told me to bleach my skin. He went on to say that I'm "very dark", like, repeatedly. In his defense, he was really drunk, and didn't say it in a patronizing way. I was so surprised after hearing that. I changed the subject really quickly. Mind you, this guy keeps asking me to ****.

I have no tears left anymore for this ish. My two previous exes said the same stuff to me. About me being "dark", "average-looking" etc. I just don't get why.

I don't have sex. Ever. I can't take my clothes off in front of these people.

I don't want to lost my friendships and relationships over such a stupid thing.

**tldr: My friend [25 M] of 5 years suggested that I [25 F]"bleach my skin" because I am "very dark." Several people have commented on my skin tone, which I think is normal and fine. I don't know how to deal with society anymore.
