I have covid, and wanted something to distract myself that wasn’t work; so, I found this post on a gossip sub where OP asked for pop culture rabbit holes- and I love those. I clicked around and stumbled into one that analyzed the lyrics of a pop singer. As a Swiftie, I was excited to revisit another classic pop track it discussed. Well… what I found was way darker than that.

This man wrote a 150 page manifesto about a young singer songwriter’s entire body of work, declaring that he had cracked her code and found something really interesting. All her songs, he said, were about one thing: limerence.

As I watched his berserk introductory Youtube video, and read through his affected stream-of-consciousness jokes about being crazy, as he questioned what sort of person would be so weirdly obsessed with this pop singer…. To me, the answer seemed pretty clear- a serial killer or a narcissist. I was close!

I’m writing this to tell you guys that the mindset shift works.

  1. he shows signs of being crazy, self-absorbed, and morbidly obsessed with a girl

  2. I believe him and refuse to ignore the flags

  3. I investigate

  4. I find out he is actually an incredibly dangerous man

I remembered a post here a few months ago where one of you shared a series of pictures of text where a narcissist broke down how they sought out their narcissistic supply. I remember the term limerence, or the way a victim obsesses over the narc as she experiences trauma bonding. It stuck with me how aware the predator was about her vulnerabilities.

Well… that post helped me see the red flags in this think piece.

I skimmed through the 150 pages, and when I got to the end, I read up on the author. Turns out he’s one of those predators who skirted the #MeToo movement. He’s a screenwriter who wrote a movie starring Will Smith, and a son to a celebrity director famous for “Coming to America” and other classics. And also…. He’s a serial rapist.

I don’t want to say his name, but the singer he analyzed is Carly Rae Jepsen. What’s most chilling about it all is that in the graphic indie wire article that described how he assaulted one of the women, they referred to her as Callie Rae.
