It’s worse then her being his girlfriend, he was her fiancé and taking care of her widowed mother. He was actually the only non-POS character in the movie. I only know this because my sister watched that damn movie thousands of times.

Rose was forced by her mother Ruth to marry him. She didn't love him. She wouldn't love someone who abuse her.

Anyone whose seen The Titanic would know that Cal Hockley (the dude in the above photo) was depicted as an absolute arrogant, stuck up, snobby POS. Not to Rose at first but towards other individuals who were less fortunate than himself. He was definitely a jerk, despite Rose's unfaithfulness.

Honestly, as a woman, if I treated people the way Cal treated people in the film and a man was being forced/guilted into marrying my arrogant ass, I would expect to be cheated on and/or dumped for another (better) woman as well.

Unfortunately Rose wasn't really in a position where she could CHOOSE whether or not to marry this dirtbag so when she became physically and emotionally attracted to a relatively decent guy with an actual fun, adventurous yet respectful personality she went the cheating route since her situation was complicated and she didn't have the option to freely or peacefully leave Cal and marry Jack instead.
