I think it generally depends on a person. There are both men and women who are okay with dating someone they don't really find that desirable just so they wouldn't be single. They can to do it for company, sex, convenience etc. Some just don't know how to be single. So when they get a better partner available, they "branchswing".

Not all people are like that though. There are enough men and women who would rather stay single, than settle for partners they aren't really interested in and they hold on for a partner they're genuinely into. Some people also actively avoid situations where they might be inclined to cheat/fall for another person.

I haven't seen a lot of it in my personal experience. I know some stories, sure, but in my close social circle most women did serial monogamy where they were single for some time between dating. They didn't leave one man for another, they usually left their partners because they weren't compatible or there were some other issues. And I married my first partner, we've been together for more than 8 years now. At this point I can't imagine myself leaving him for someone else, as it goes against my values and even if we take "AWALT" thing seriously, I don't think there's anyone better personally for me.

I guess "branchswining" is more common when you date casually or among people who date kind of...chaotically and like some drama in their lives. Most stories I know include men and women who overall have rather chaotic lives, like party girls/boys or people who often change their place of living etc.
