Can't agree with ya. Research says otherwise... Studies have shown that most people's friends have more friends than them. aka they are probably higher SMV than you.

We even see this on social media, like Twitter.

No, most of my "friends" ATM are higher SMV. It really sucks, actually. It's my fault I guess, in that its entirely my fault my SMV is so low, but it's pretty lame going places and constantly just being in the background while everyone else is getting hit on non stop. I actually see what it's like to be the designated ugly chick of a group now. Can't imagine living like that all day every day.

No. A lot of my friends and acquaintances are higher value than me. It's very petty to avoid high value friends just to make yourself look better. It's lazy and basically you're limiting your social and potentially professional connections.

At the same time, I don't ditch friends/acquaintances just because they might be in a ditch. That's sentimentality, and one of the things that separates me from a machine.

Also, it CAN make a high value person look good to "bother hanging out with low SMV guys". I had high value mentors whom I owe a lot to. The relationships were mutually beneficial.

My friends range in SMV from considerably more than me to much lower. I have noticed that this affects what we do together. The guys that are equal or higher than me are ones I would usually chase tail with, where as the lower SMV guys are just get drunk and laugh our ass off type friends. I try to get them to approach women but they are scared.

A friend of my back from my University days was, and still is, high SMV.

I met him when he was 23. I was 17 at the time. I was still a touch short, chubby, and awkward as hell. Momma's boy, golden cage all my life, I went to less then 5 social outing during high school, one of them my prom. In short, I was a giant loser.

Then there was him. Highly muscular, even proportions at 5 10 and 235 pounds, on the rowing team, not bad looking either, dirty brown blond curling locks. Already finished college, very smart, major of Ancient History, trilingual when I met him ( polyglot now, he picked up Greek during the last few years) and highly religious. Always polite, not intimidated by anyone. In short, a very attractive guy, genuinely nice as well, though not BP.

We became very good friends. We hung out at least 2 times a week, and when I moved away for work we stayed in touch over the year we couldn't meet.

He was a boon to me. I learned the difference between letting the world just push me, and starting to push back, and he showed me part of what kind of man I want to be.

I like to think I've improved a little. Not fat, not even chubby anymore, an even 220 at 6 feet, starting to row, and I can actually carry a conversation with people now.

TL;Dr Was fat short loser, became good friends with high SMV guy, he had a good influence on me, neither of the potential reasons OP posted have ever been apparent to me.
