South Africa: EFF in eThekwini calls for equal attention to women’s & men’s issues

While I’m very sympathetic to this stance, SA is not the country that should be taking it. SA is the single most dangerous country in the world for solo female travelers. 40% of women in the country will be raped in their lifetime. Keep in mind that’s rape alone, not all instances of sexual violence. Nevermind the fact that gender-based violence, which is overwhelmingly directed at women in SA, is increasing. As are the number of women murdered, increased by 50% this year.

I want to point out that I’m not saying by any means that men’s issues should be ignored. They are important and should be addressed. It’s just that in a country like SA where women disproportionately experience gendered violence, they need more of the attention. This isn’t like the US where the statistics are skewed and obfuscated to make it look like men don’t experience similar levels of gender violence. Women truly are getting battered and murdered in SA at alarming rates and something must be done about it.
