Getting a number shouldn't be some sort of end goal in itself, or a discrete event that happens out of vacuum.

You should be talking about fun stuff and work your way into the possibility of a meetup to do something fun, and tell her you'll give send her a text and to give you her number.

make it more part of the conversation.

Ideally you should be insta-dating them or inviting them to your place following the interaction. Getting the number would come after the hookup at this point. Always shoot for a date or f-close before getting a number. Chicks give out their numbers like candy and once you get relegated to the 'guys texting me' zone, you have a far less chance of moving things forward then you would've had if you pushed for a date or lay during the initial interaction. You'll never know if she was DTF or had the time free to hang out NOW if you make your goal getting her number to hang out later.

You ask for her number when you decide you'd like to contact her in the future. There's no set time frame.

You approach a female because you're attracted. You start a conversation as a result of that attraction. By the end of the interaction you'll know whether or not that attraction has increased or declined. Live in the moment and stop worrying about time.
