Nobody is discouraging women from getting that engineering/law/physician degree and going into that field. There are many organizations created solely to encourage more women to study STEM fields. Eventually, it is a personal choice to major in gender studies/sociology/MRS degree

My wife got yelled at for being a stay at home mom. She was told that she doesn't value herself enough, that she must think she isn't good enough to get a good job.

Well what they couldn't possibly think is maybe she is fine at home. That working would actually cost more money. That day care for two kids at a decent day care would cost as much as her working in the same job as before. She enjoys being apart of our children's life.

I found this comment interesting:

It's because jobs dominated by women are undervalued. When men enter a female dominated field, salaries go UP. For example, nursing salaries have gone up since more men entered the nursing field.

The reason for it is that when men entered the field, they went into the highest-paying specialties, that require more education, and more dedication. (I suspect this is primarily because men are expected to support a family.)
