In a public bathroom, the seat is always going to get pissed on. At least if it’s up, it’s in a protected position for the ladies. At home, put it back down. Outside the home, leave it up always.

I guess the question is what state of being is the toilet seat meant to be in when not in use, in my house we decided both the seat and the cover down, it looks neater and means both men and women need to put it up and back down again to use it.

Yes, it should always go down, cover and all. This also prevents dropped items from falling into the water when not in use. That's a much bigger deal than people realize, until they fall victim to a toilet left open.

I personally like to close the lid before I flush.. this prevents the splash up of bacteria laden vapour particles into the air. My girlfriend says I’m germaphobic. I am.

I think the public unisex restroom is an exception. What we men have a problem with are people who are either too lazy or too afraid of germs to lift up the seat in the stall before they pee. Urine and backsplash gets on the seat and it is disgusting. So when I have to take a shit, I either just hold it until I get home or force myself to clean up someone else’s urine.
Keeping the seat up in a public men or unisex restroom eliminates the problem.
At home the rule is the seat and lid stay down. Always return something back to its original state after using.
Side note: It isn’t hard to look before you sit. It really isn’t. Neither is putting the seat down. A minor annoyance but it doesn’t warrant a sign on the wall. Says more about the person who posted it than the people leaving the seat up.

This argument about a toilet seat has always been one I never understood, will never understand and just pisses me off. You walk into a bathroom, if you need the toilet seat down, put it down and do your business. That's it. That's the end of it. If I walk into a bathroom and have to take a shit and the seat is up, I put it down. If I go back into that same bathroom to piss, I put it up. I just do whatever is necessary to do my business. If you complain about moving a toilet seat into the correct position FOR YOU!!! when YOU need to use it, you're a fuckin piece of shit. Fuck you. Just do it your damn self. Why would anyone complain about that is beyond me. It's. a. toilet. seat. I also got overly upset about this and that's just who I am. So deal with it.

In public toilets I always check if there are paper before and at the same time I take a bit so when I need to adjust seat up or down I grip with the paper. At home seat is always down cause I don't want kitten to fall in.
maybe I'm just weird, but I'm ok with that.
