"How to build a modern man: Helping boys to grow up happy" Big (14-minute read) article in the Irish Times. Mentions patriarchy once and a female gender studies lecturer is quoted but not completely written from that perspective, so possibly a useful conversation starter

Study finds that "manuscripts written by women as solo authors or coauthored by women were treated even more favorably by referees and editors" yet gets reported with the heading "no gender bias". Gender bias against men doesn't seem to count as gender bias!

Following a petition, Winchester University cancelled a talk with two men's rights activists in 2019. Here is the text of one of the talks (by William Collins) that were planned. It covers education, suffrage and coverture. It's disappointing that such views can't be expressed in such a forum.

95% of strip searches of children reported in England & Wales are of boys. This may or may not be an issue but I found it interesting that it was considered unfair that black children were more likely to be strip-searched but this huge gender disparity was barely mentioned in lots of media coverage.

I've read the whole thing now.

I've read many similar pieces before. The most apt title would be "damage control". There are countless examples. It's very sophisticated gaslighting:

No, no, we don't hate men, we don't generalize you or want exterminate you, when we say #yesallmen or #killallmen.

It's just the same old cloak and aggress scheme feminism is famous for.

When I ask my son the same question about being a man in today’s world, he starts by telling me a list of all the things he knows men shouldn’t be. This list includes, but is not confined to, being sexist, violent, bullying harassing or trolling anyone.

Yep, the feminist aggression (esp. social violence) this boy has been exposed to in the media and education system has taken its toll on his self image. He is ashamed of who he is. Just like feminists want him to. They will never admit to this, but actions speak louder than words. This is right out of Maoist brainwashing manuals that were used on captured US soldiers during the Korean war. Tom Golden has looked at the underlying psychodynamics in detail:

Brainwashing: Feminism and Male Feminists

The making of gynocentric soldiers

There are, most of us now accept, many, many ways to be a woman. But society is still less sure the same is true of men, and clinging on to very rigid, archaic notions of masculinity, in which boys don’t cry and love rough and tumble and play sport and enjoy the craic. Some of that is true some of the time, but there is more than one way to be a man.

My personal favorite pet, feminists blaming "society" rather than taking responsibility and face accountability for the fact that it is themselves and women who do not find "soft, sensitive, caring" boys and men attractive. That it is them who use their reproducitve power to keep men in this strangehold of "you must be a tough protector/provider" and since they can't face that part of themselves, they have to make their role invisible by blaming society. Textbook example gaslighting going on here.

Following is a longer part on the word SIMP which stands for "Sucker Idolizing Mediocre Pussy" which has it's origins in PUA materials. What it means is that men should be confident about themselves and not worship women for just existing or subjugate/denigrate themselves. Women find such lack of confidence unattractive and it seriously deminishes the man's chance to get anywhere but the friend zone. The opposite would be "playfull mastery": being relaxed, outcome independet, confident, humorously teasing etc

They have to of course strawmen it into something else entirely to bend it into use in their narrative. It's just more brainwashing, gaslighting and flat out lies. They claim that it critizes men for being sensitive which as detailed above is flat out wrong, but fits their narrative and aims (see brainwashing video above).

For Byrnes, part of the negativity around sensitivity and kindness is that the movement to create a safer and more equal society for women has left many young men feeling alienated and defensive, and inclined to dig further into traditional notions of gender.

Again this is by design. Attacking men's identity and making them feel ashamed is the key dynamic in this brainwashing process.

We saw it happening in our sexual health models. We’d start our section on consent, and they’d say, ‘you’re going to tell us not to rape women’. Here are 16-year-old boys who are already defensive, who are already defending masculinity.”

Which is exactly what happens in these courses. Again shaming and attacking identity are the core modus operandi of this brainwashing program.

Prof Swaine adds that it’s important that conversations about men and masculinity don’t become about a zero sum game – the idea that for women to gain power, men must cede it.

Meanwhile misogyny is now a hate crime in the UK, while misandry is not. Meanwhile girls who are the absolute majority of all college students get gender exclusive scholarships while there are no such gender exclusive scholarships for the minority: boys.

I could list countless more examples. Don't fall for this bullshit. Actions speak louder than words esp words that are specifically designed to repress the justified objection to this blatant sexism and injustice.

Masculine power may not be a problem unless and until it is executed in a way that’s problematic.

Wow. The tautology here is over 9000. The point that is cleverly made invisible by this slight of hand? WHO gets to decide what is problematic. That's the key instrument in taking control.

Boys should be taught to use their power to be who they want to be beyond rigid ideas and expectations and in gender equitable ways.

... and in gender equitable ways.

Can you see the feminist "man box" now? Can you see how they just want to swap the "traditional expectations" with a new set of expectations defined by them? It's very skilled manipulation to put it into the last four words of a sentence that begins with a pledge to freedom. Very skillfull manipulation indeed.

Let’s move away from binaries and move more towards the question of how do we use our power to be our best selves?”

Again, "our best selves" ...

According to the feminist standard of "a good man".

The funniest part is, that in the beginning of this article the have this part:

Dr Aisling Swaine,  professor of gender studies at University College Dublin who was named by A-Political as one the world’s 100 most influential people in gender policy 2021, worries that even the notion of a “good man” is fraught, and risks setting up another binary. “It suggests there are good men and bad men. That alienates men, making them feel they have to fit into one or other box, and if they’re not quite sure which one they might be perceived to be in, then how to engage. We need to maintain the space for women to voice and make visible things that are realities in their lives. But we also need a conversation around where masculinities and behaviours come into it.”

and then after bringing that part, they unload the all the normative bullshit detailed above.

There's a nice scene in "the wolf of wallstreet" where Jordan Bellford says:

First we reel them in. Give them a good, profitable blue chip stock to buy their trust and entice their appitite, make them hungry for more, awaken their greed.

And then when they have swallowed the bait, we unload the bullshit: The penny stocks, the pink slips, the whole armada of doom.

It's the same modus operandi. Scammers always try to win your trust first, then they appeal to your desires and then they rip you off.

same here.

We’d start our section on consent, and they’d say, ‘you’re going to tell us not to rape women’. Here are 16-year-old boys who are already defensive, who are already defending masculinity.

How is it "defending masculinity" to pick up on the fact that they are going to be targeted for special instruction and censure because of their gender? Yes, they're defensive but they're not "defending masculinity". They're defending themselves.

Ideological possession leads to such errors in judgement, I'd guess.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I am getting really tired of this cycle of blaming men and boys, and then saying "men and boys are alienated and need to be included in the conversation".

I can only see a couple of ways this can end:

  1. The issue just burns out without a satisfactory resolution for anyone, or something else takes over as the cultural boogeyman.
  2. Some movement in response reaches a critical mass and the mainstream "dialogue" is superseded or becomes irrelevant. This could be a highly reactionary movement with an overall negative impact, or a more positive responsive movement for men and boys.

[–]shit-zen-giggles 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

They want you to become tired. Wearing down your defenses and demoralizing you is the whole point of going through that cycle over and over and over again.

With respect to your proposed endings:

I'd consider the first highly unlikely and the second one almost as much.

My best bet is that generational change will bring a transformation (though not an end). The question is how much worse it is going to get before it gets better.

Totally agree with shit-zen-giggles above.

This is a thinly veiled feminist hit job on men and boys. The author recites a few anecdotes, then throws the feminist life buoy. Then the author using the shallowest of pretense, pretends to save men and boys from the horrors of the patriarchy, and their clearly toxic masculinity. All men and boys have to do is bend the knee, and adopt the feminist neomasculinity created by, guess who... feminists.

If you believe this garbage, you need to redicover your masculinity. Your real masculinitiy. Not the shallow feminist strawman masculinity discussed in the Irish Times.
