Good points on the correlation and causes. There could be various reasons e.g:

[i] Fewer men were circumcised in those days.
[ii] Circumcised men are impotent due to lack of sensitivity by that age (something you alluded to).
[iii] They are European, where circumcision is not common unless for explicit religious reasons.
