What do you guys think of the relationship between Big Ed and Rose in 90 Fiance?

I’ve seen a lot of videos about it lately. I think most people agree that Rosemarie is only with him for a Green Card. So many comments are

"she had to sleep with THAT? Just give her a Green Card already 😂"

People KNOW she is using Ed, but they are still more sympathetic towards her, because:

-She is poor and a single mother, so she is seen as doing it out of necessity, unlike the typical gold digger who’s a spoiled brat who wants big diamonds.

-Ed isn’t really a good person. He humiliates her. He lies to her about very important things like wanting to get a vasectomy even though she made it very clear that she wanted two kids. He also bought her gifts that were actually for him, like buying her lingerie. All of this really irritated people.

I don’t think this is a black and white situation, obviously they’re both using each other, and I don’t think either of them are evil or innocent.

However, I don’t think the fact people side with Rose is entirely because of gender, there are a lot of other reasons, as I previously mentioned. I’ve seen other episodes of the show, and whenever there’s an American woman that’s either old or fat who gets with a young handsome man, people will almost always side with the young man. So really I think it has more to do with the people seeing the younger person as going through hardship for a Green Card, while the older, uglier person as taking advantage of that.

Ed wants a wife and Rose wants a better life via a green card. Both can get what they want. Ed should not have lied to her when he knew she wanted more children. Rose CAN do better, but is willing to sacrifice herself to get out of grinding and hopeless poverty. Ed should be grateful Rose was even willing to give him a second look.

I understand and have seen how he’s demonized and ridiculed in the show, but I was wondering if you would consider her youth and beauty to be a commodity similar to his money and nationality? It’s definitely comparable to prostitution if that is the case, but I don’t understand what he was really expecting from the relationship basically... if he didn’t want children or be financially and legally responsible for a young, poor, foreign woman, why wouldn’t he just marry someone closer to his age who may not be able to have children anymore, lives in America and is financially stable?

I do not watch the show, what caught my eye in the above.

Rose can do a lot better and that Ed is a creep.

Hypergamy. I sometimes wonder if it is something about women that leads to hypergamous behavior, or if it is at least mostly the constant heckling of their partners, over and above the general hatred of all men, that the women hear from all around them, people judging their partners as not good enough, all but begging them to leave him, telling them they can do better.

Rose is, of course, painted as the victim of some sort of predator.

Because the experience of being in a loving relationship with a man who is older than you is just like the experience of a gazzelle that is eaten alive by lions. Or is it that predators do not eat their prey, do lions actually just marry gazelle?

Oh, but it's just the age difference, old men are yucky. She can do better. See, because he's older than her, it trips peoples pedophilia alarm, any man who would marry a 23 year old mother would surely also marry a 10 year old child.

he man is automatically the predator and the woman his victim. This is actually a very destructive belief, because it really puts men at a disadvantage. A woman from a developing country who is more interested in economic benefits than anything else can be just as predatory.

No, a woman who marries for money is predatory, but a man who marries for love of the intrinsic qualities of his wife is not. She is not 'just as predatory' if she is a gold digger, she is THE predator.

Nobody seems to be saying "poor Ed, she's only with him for his money and the chance to move to the US and have a better life".

Poor Ed. If not for this maybe predator, he would be able to live out a solitary loveless life, dying alone and unmissed, poor poor Ed. Now he faces the unknown future, with the possibility that she may divorce him and clean him out, just like every other married man, poor Ed. He will have a short period of intoxicating bliss, at some point words will be spoken or choices made, bells that can not be unrung, there will be fights, hopefully reconciliations, but in the end what? Who can know? One way to find out.
