I know John Oliver is one of those figures with a mixed reputation. In general, he shows sympathy and understanding to those who are minorities, especially women. But with his latest bit on the One Child Policy, I think he really punched down when he denigrated the lonely men in China who are in their situation though no fault of their own. I encourage you to check out the piece if you haven't, but his biases are clear. He has little sympathy for lonely men and he's not subtle about it.

I think it speaks to a larger issue about lonely men getting little sympathy. It's okay to joke about them, but not other minorities. It's a gross double standard and one John Oliver takes advantage of more than most.
