I'm a huge John Candy fan, as are most sensible people. He's very lovable.

John Hughes is another star from the 80's, and he recognized John Candy's talent immediately. As did more "serious" directors like Oliver Stone. In his one serious role Candy did a brilliant job of playing some guy in New Orleans who witnessed the Kennedy assassination.

Anyway, "Uncle Buck" is a beloved comedy that most people would or will enjoy.

But there's a very peculiar end-sequence: Buck takes a young boy and locks him in his trunk.

Now the boy didn't even insult the young lady's honor (his niece, and the point of the film); he's just a regular horny kid. Roger Ebert actually remarked upon this, and said that the film was a horror show.

Let's reverse the genders. An incel doesn't get laid so his Aunt kidnaps the chick and locks her up in her trunk. Um, I'm pretty sure that's not gonna fly as a comedy.

Anyway, I still like the film because -- John Candy -- but I think this is a really fascinating example of how we treat teenage boys vs. teenage girls. Man and Woman.
