The Stability of Retrospective Child Sexual Abuse Reports and its Association With Problem Avoidance

The analyses presented in this report are based on data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health (aka Add Health). Add Health is the most comprehensive and largest nationally representative longitudinal study of adolescent health ever conducted and has followed the original cohort of adolescents (starting in 1994 when they were in grades 7 through 12) over 4 waves conducted in 14 years. This report uses measures from the last 2 waves, III and IV, conducted in 2001–2002 and 2007–2008, and comprising 15,197 and 15,701 participants, respectively.

In wave III, 4.8% of all participants reported experiencing CSA at least once by 6th grade. The prevalence of CSA was 5.0% and 4.5% for females and males, respectively. In wave IV, rates of reported CSA first occurring at age 12 or younger were 3.8%, 5.5%, and 1.8% for all participants, females, and males, respectively. Particularly notable is the over two-fold decrease from wave III to wave IV for reported CSA among males.

Just one out of four participants who reported CSA in a previous wave reported it again in the latter, and just one out of three who reported CSA in the latter wave reported it in the former.

Second, our findings further suggest that men may be more prone to incon- sistent CSA reporting. The sex differences we found in reporting patterns corroborate Widom and Morris’s (1996) findings in which men were much less likely than women to report confirmed cases of CSA several years after its occurrence. In our particular study, we found that males were significantly less likely than females to report CSA in wave IV when they had done so in wave III.
