Mental Health Symptoms Among Male Victims of Partner Violence

The correlation analyses identified significant positive associations between the two different types ofIPV victimization (psychological and physical) and the four mental health symptoms. For both females and males, significant associations were identified between higher psychological and physical IPV victimization and reporting higher levels of anxiety, depression, hostility, and somatization. However, there were some correlations that differed between females and males(first research question). Among female respondents, no significant associations were found between higher sexual IPV victimization and any mental health symptom. This was especially surprising in that among males, significant relationships were reported between higher sexual IPV victimization and three of the mental health symptoms: anxiety, depression, and somatization. The means for reporting sexual victimization arelow and reveal a lower level type of sexual victimization (e.g., My partner made me have sex without acondom). It may be that male respondents may bemore sensitive to lower level sexual victimization than female respondents and therefore more likely to report more mental health symptoms. The two-way MANOVA revealed a significant effect of level of IPV victimization on all four mental health symptoms, with victims with higher levels of IPV victimization reporting significantly higher mental health symptoms. The analysis did not find that females and males significantly differed in reporting mental health symptoms, even among those victims who reported higher levels of IPV victimization (second research question). In other words, higher mental health problems were related not to whether the victim was female or male but rather to the amount of partner violence that the victim experienced.
